Friends of Kirke Park
Kirke Park is located on 9th Avenue NW, between NW 70th And NW 73rd streets, in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle.
Friends of Kirke Park, formed in 2008, is a group of people whose mission is to “work to maintain and complete the original design of the park as decided by the community during the Park's development process.”
Since its opening in the summer of 2012, the park has become a focus of the neighborhood, a popular gathering place and recreational space for all ages. The park provides areas for vigorous play, as well as areas for picnicking or for sitting quietly. In particular, it is a destination park for young families.
Although Kirke Park opened in 2012, there are three features that were in the original design that could not be accommodated in the budget. From the beginning, these features were seen as meeting important community needs. Friends of Kirke Park is working toward securing funds to complete the original community-inspired design.
#1 The Trellis: This large wooden structure will frame the entrance, completing the “front porch” of the park. It will also serve important community functions, such as the park’s annual outdoor family movie in August. Construction scheduled for Spring 2013
#2 The Skate Dot: A small feature for skateboarding activity, Letter of Intent for Grant due May 2013
#3 The Rain Garden: This feature will help mitigate rainwater runoff, provide a safe buffer between the park and the street, serve as a traffic-calming feature, and enhance the appearance of the west side of the park. Submitting for Funds 2/13
Good News! We are SO close to having secured the funds necessary to build the trellis. As soon as we raise the remaining $3,450, construction can begin! (Total cost: $32,000)
